F1 to implement a knockout system

Formula One bosses will introduce a revolutionary knockout qualifying session in their latest bid to make the sport more exciting. Team chiefs have agreed on the big revamp and it should be in place for next year’s championship.

It is hardly the first time that qualifying has been tinkered with and the current system of one flying lap has proved unpopular. More importantly, F1 teams believe this ground-breaking way of qualifying will be a big hit with the fans — so extra TV viewers around the world will please the sport’s sponsors.

Drivers will have a maximum of four laps depending on how quick they are around the track. All 20 cars will have one lap over a 15-minute period and the five slowest will immediately be given the boot.

They will be between 16th and 20th place on the Sunday starting grid. The 15 remaining drivers and their machines will race in another lap and, once again, the slowest five will be knocked out and placed between 11th and 15th on the grid. This continues again and there will be the fourth and final qualifying shootout where the five remaining cars fight it out for pole position. The Sun
