Rotterdam eyes F1 race

The Dutch port of Rotterdam will take one step closer to its dream of hosting the Formula One circus when Christijan Albers takes to the streets in his Minardi next month.

The city was listed among those hoping to attract future Formula One events earlier this year, although organizers admit that a full-blown grand prix may prove to be a bit ambitious. Albers' presence at the Maasside Monaco event on 7 August, however, is a step in the right direction for a country still in love with the sport despite not having had a front-line driver for some time.

Albers is expected to pilot his Minardi-Cosworth PS05 around a specially laid-out 2.6km street circuit in Rotterdam's Maasside district, from the city hall at the Coolsingel and following Hofplein, the Pompenburg, Goudsesingel, Mariniersweg and Churchillplein back to Coolsingel. Stands and videowalls will be erected along the route giving fans, who will be able to access the festival for free, coverage of the entire lap. SkySports
