Champ Car speculation

UPDATE This Toronto Star article speculates further – Initial reports had Tagliani being placed with HVM Racing, formerly Herdez Competition, but the team's managing director Keith Wiggins told the Star he had not spoken with Tagliani or his agent. Wiggins said he'd welcome Tagliani provided he brings sponsorship money. [Editor's Note: Strike Tagliani from HVM – see updated Silly Season page]

"Our second car is wide open," said Wiggins, although Sweden's Bjorn Wirdheim has been rumored for that seat. "But (Tagliani) has to bring money. That, unfortunately, is the situation today."

The latest report had Tagliani going to Walker Racing with Champ Car footing all or part of the approximately $4 million cost of running the car. Prappas said he knew nothing of such a deal and that Tagliani, who was in Montreal yesterday trying to drum up financial support, had some sponsorship backing. Walker is expected to announce its drivers later this week.

03/14/05 This SPEED TV article speculates on the following as yet unsigned drivers for Champ Car:

  • Andrew Ranger at Mi-Jack Conquest Racing. (Agree)
  • Sweden's Bjorn Wirdheim at Forsythe. (Agree)
  • Oriol Servia along with a Sperafico brother at Dale Coyne Racing. (Agree on Servia but if the Argentina race happens, Mazzacane is in the 2nd seat)
  • Roberto Gonzalez will team with Mario Dominguez at HVM Racing (Agree on Dominguez, but Gonzalez is doubtful).
  • Glock joins Hunter-Reay at Rocketsports. (Agree)
  • If Rodolfo Lavin has Corona Beer, he could be at HVM or Forsythe. (Lavin has Corona money but much less than last year)
  • The article doesn't mention Jos Verstappen who claims to have money and wants to race Champ Car. We could see Verstappen in a third Forsythe car if he has money. The article doesn't mention the new Atlantic team that is moving up to Champ Car – announcement scheduled for Thursday.
