What will RCR announce today?

Richard Childress has a news conference set for this morning to announce that Jeff Burton will drive his #31 Cingular-sponsored cars next season, taking Robby Gordon's place. It is unclear what Burton's crew might look like; there has been speculation Childress has a major crew swap in the works. But in a major twist, it appears Childress doesn't have Jack Daniels locked up as a sponsor for his third team. It was expected he would also announce that sponsor today along with driver Dave Blaney for his third team, the one for whom Burton drives. But the Jack Daniels sponsorship is still in play, according to team sources, with both car owners Bill Davis and Robby Gordon in the running. As of Thursday, a Jack Daniels deal hadn't been signed by any party. There are major questions now being raised about the American On Line sponsorship that Childress has had the past two years. If Childress dumps AOL and if NASCAR executives are unable to keep the Time-Warner division sponsorship in play, it would be a major blow to the sport. Time-Warner is a company with a $76 billion capitalization. Winston Salem Journal
