Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel says the Mercedes drivers were in a "world of their own" during qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton comfortably beat teammate Nico Rosberg to pole position at Monza, with the Ferraris the best part of a second down.

Vettel finished eight tenths adrift of Hamilton, saving a slide at Parabolica on his final lap, with Kimi Raikkonen a tenth further back.

"First of all, I wasn't that happy with the first shot in Q3; I sort of lost the rhythm a bit, and then it I was able to get it back," said Vettel.

"I went on the limit in the last corner; I lost it and was a bit late going back on the throttle.

"I think the lap itself was not a great start; it was not a great first sector, I was still losing a little bit compared to Q2, but I brought it back in sector two and sector three.

"Obviously I'm very happy for us to lock out the second row as a team.

"I'm not entirely happy, as the gap is quite big to those guys [Mercedes] ahead, it looks like they've been in a world of their own today, but who knows what happens tomorrow."

Vettel hopes Ferrari will be able to reward its home fans in the race

"For sure it's great to see that we've got so much support," he said.

"I think last year was already phenomenal and this year seems even better, as on every out lap you do people stand up and wave, it's great to see all the flags – the support we get here is massive.

"A big thanks to the Tifosi, and hopefully we can give something back."
