Four of the GK428 powerplants have been built, with one each going to ORECA, Onroak Automotive, Riley-Multimatic and Dallara for installation and initial testing.
Development of the 4.2-liter V8 engine began last August, when the British manufacturer was awarded the spec LMP2 engine contract for the FIA World Endurance Championship and European Le Mans Series. More than 10,000 km of dyno-based durability testing has been completed since.
On-track testing is expected to begin next month from at least two of the constructors, in ORECA and Onroak, while the new Riley Mk. XXX is not expected to hit the track until October.
An additional six engines will be made available by the end of October, with ten more set to be delivered for private testing by Dec. 1.
In addition to being the spec engine provider for the WEC and ELMS, the Gibson powerplant is also eligible in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, which kicks off its season at the Rolex 24 at Daytona in January. John Dagys/Sportscar365
