Marquez quickest in opening Misano session

World Champion Marc Marquez set the quickest time as riders sampled a newly resurfaced Misano circuit during the opening practice session for the San Marino Grand Prix.

Marquez moved to the top of the times early on and lowered his benchmark to end the session with a 1:33.328, 0.094s clear of Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo.

Wild card rider Michele Pirro was the highest-placed Ducati rider as he clocked the third best time during the closing stages to demote Honda's Dani Pedrosa.

Regular Ducati rider Andrea Dovizioso was fifth, with Championship leader Valentino Rossi in sixth, 0.758s down on Marquez.

Tech 3 secured seventh and eighth courtesy of Pol Espargar¢ and Bradley Smith as Cal Crutchlow finished in ninth for LCR Honda.

Andrea Iannone completed the top 10 for Ducati in a session where the only rider to encounter trouble was Claudio Corti, who suffered a high-speed crash at Turn 9.
