Hoosiers watch IndyCar drop, instead of ball, to ring in the New Year

Thousands gathered for a first-of-its-kind New Year's celebration in Indianapolis to ring in 2015.

An IndyCar was "dropped" on Georgia Street downtown in place of New York's traditional ball drop. Thousands gathered in front of Bankers Life Fieldhouse for the event (Watch video).

After the party, one of the biggest wishes revelers shared with us was for the event to become an annual tradition.

"This is awesome. I've been waiting for something totally like this," said one reveler.

"This is the best thing that Indianapolis has ever had. They need to have this every every year," added another."

"It was amazing. I had such a good time. I am so proud of Indianapolis."

The success came despite it being one of the coldest New Year's Eve's on record in central Indiana. Spectators were able to stay warm for part of the night inside Bankers Life Fieldhouse. WTHR
