Scot Elkins will join Pro Mazda/USF2000 as Race Director

The Mazda Road to Indy has made a lot of big waves this offseason, and has done so again with its new race director for the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires and Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda.

Scot Elkins, managing director, IMSA Technical Regulations, will join the MRTI as race director for those two championships. He'll add those roles in addition to his existing IMSA commitments.

An MRTI spokesperson confirmed the news.

Elkins replaces Randy Hembrey, who had been in the role.

This is an intriguing bit of news to note given where the Verizon IndyCar Series and TUDOR United SportsCar Championship currently sit from officiating and regulations standpoints.

IndyCar has not confirmed a race director replacement for Beaux Barfield, who has moved onto IMSA as its new race director.

INDYCAR president of competition and operations Derrick Walker has spoken of a pool of stewards who could be used for IndyCar races, and you figure with Elkins' race control experience, he could potentially be in play there.

Meanwhile from an IMSA standpoint, with Simon Hodgson brought in late last year and Barfield also joining, Elkins had support from other bodies instead of having to do – essentially – the job of three people at once.

Whether this is merely an "in addition to" story or perhaps something more down the road will be interesting to watch. NBC Sports
