Sebastian Vettel was a close third in the Red Bull Renault while his teammate Daniel Ricciardo could only manage the 12th quickest time after his Red Bull lemon experienced gear change issues. For once Vettel's lemon did not break down too many times on him and he showed his stuff 3/10ths of a second behind the Mercedes of Rosberg.
The Ferraris of Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso rounded out the top-5.
The session saw a number of drivers spin, go off into the grass, or cut the chicane. At the end it none of it really mattered. Mercedes will win on Sunday in a parade and the rest will go home knowing they have not got a chance. They should all start working on their 2015 cars and forget about 2014. They are wasting their time if they do.
"It was a bit of a shame to lose some laps; we had something with the gearbox, but fortunately we got it checked and went out again," said Vettel speaking about his lemon. "It meant that we were maybe a bit off the rhythm compared to some of the others, but it seemed to be alright and we still got some good laps completed. I think there’s still a lot if improvement we can do, the Mercedes is very quick, but it was okay as a start to the weekend."
