1 person fatally shot near Coke Lot at Indy (3rd Update)

UPDATE #3 Authorities have dropped a preliminary murder charge against a man arrested in a deadly shooting near the Indianapolis Motor Speedway because there was not enough conclusive evidence to charge him with murder.

A Marion County Jail spokesman says Avory Johnson was released Tuesday afternoon.

05/25/14 Another shooting was reported inside the Coke Lot near Indianapolis Motor Speedway, just one day after a man was shot and killed during tailgating, police said.

The second shooting happened about 2:30 a.m. near the Stratford Apartments when two people who were camping out were reportedly robbed. Police said one of the victims was beaten by several people before the robbery. When the victim's friend went to chase away the suspects, one of the suspects shot him.

The man who was shot was taken to Eskenazi Health Hospital in critical condition along with his friend who was listed in fair condition.

Indiana State Police and Speedway Police were searching for suspects near the Statford Apartments.

Anyone with information about the incident was asked to call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.

05/24/14 One man was fatally shot in the Coke Lot near Indianapolis Motor Speedway early Saturday, police confirmed.

The shooting was reported about 2:30 a.m. in Lot 1C, where hundreds of people were camping out ahead of the Indy 500 race scheduled for Sunday.

The victim was identified as Max Levine, 25, of Kokomo. Few details were given about what may have prompted the shooting, but police said they were interviewing witnesses and one person was taken into custody.
