NHRA postpones Southern Nationals until Monday

After an eight hour rain delay the 34th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals started at Atlanta Dragway.

Seventy-five minutes and five pairs of Top Fuel dragsters later NHRA officials to postpone the event until Monday due to worsening track conditions as a result of rapidly falling temperatures.

The event will resume at 9 a.m. with Lucas Oil Sportsman eliminations followed at 10 a.m. with the conclusion of the first round of Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle.

In the third pairing of Top Fuel dragsters No. 6 qualifier Brittany Force driving the Castrol EDGE dragster was eliminated. Racing veteran Pat Dakin both dragsters went into immediate tire smoke (loss of traction) before Dakin was able to get his race car under control and cross the finish line for the win with an elapsed time of 8.791 seconds, almost five seconds slower than his qualifying time of 3.828 seconds.

The ESPN2 broadcast originally scheduled for tonight will be aired from 9 p.m. until 10 p.m. ET. The rest of the race will be telecast tomorrow on ESPN2 from 8 p.m. until 11 p.m. ET.
