Rain Delay in St. Pete

UPDATE
We just got word from IndyCar that the racetrack will reopen for activity at 3:30 p.m. ET. No word as to whether qualifying will begin then, or how exactly this affects the rest of the schedule.

The grandstands have been evacuated here in St. Pete. No word yet as to when racing activity will resume.

So much for our aspiring careers as weather forecasters.

Yes, mere hours after one member of AR1’s on-the-ground staff here at The Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg predicted rain would not be a factor in today’s event, we are in a rain delay with a severe weather evacuation advisory.

The delay began right as Indy Lights presented by Cooper Tires were headed out for their qualifying session. Just in the last few minutes the rain has intensified, and as of 2:20 p.m. ET, Indy Lights qualifying, Verizon IndyCar Series qualifying, and races for Pirelli World Challenge, Pro Mazda and U.S. F2000 are all on hold.

How exactly, the rest of the day will play out, we don’t know yet for certain. We imagine the powers-to-be in IndyCar are attempting to sort matters, and will pass along any information when we receive it.
