Danica Patrick goes to backup car after early wreck at Bristol

Danica Patrick lost control of her car on just her third lap on the track Friday, turned into Parker Kligerman and then hit the wall at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Patrick will have to go to a backup car for the remainder of the Food City 500 weekend. Kligerman, who suffered damage to the front end of his car, sat in his car as his team made repairs after the accident.

The damage to Patrick’s car, though, was too much for her team to fix and she had to go to her backup car. She returned to the track in time to get some practice during the 90-minute session. Practice is key for Patrick, who is 35th in owner points and in a precarious position to be eligible for one of the seven spots determined by owner points for those not in the top 36 in qualifying.

Patrick will be able to start the race where she qualifies, since she had gone to a backup before qualifying late Friday afternoon.

The wreck was Patrick's fourth in four weekends this season. She was collected in a multicar crash at Daytona, and then was involved in two spins after contact with Justin Allgaier at Phoenix. She finished a season-best 21st last week at Las Vegas.
