Power likes idea of racing on Indy road course, others don’t (2nd Update)

UPDATE #2 This racer.com article talks about teams being split on international races. Season should start in January and end Labor Day and international races should count for points and be part of the regular season. Having them not count for points makes then irrelevant and ridiculous. Why bother. Who wants to pay to see an exhibition these days. Either they race for real or stay home.

08/29/13 Two Indy 500 winners, Helio Castroneves and Dario Franchitti, say in this Racer.com article they are skeptical of racing IndyCars on the Indy road course. AR1.com agrees as we noted in our Editor's note below. The IndyCar's put on a fantastic show on the Indy oval. So good in fact the fans would come back to see a 2nd oval race on Labor Day weekend under the lights as the season finale. It is a no-brainer. The Baltimore race needs to move to the first Sunday in May, two weeks before the Preakness horse race at Pimlico in Baltimore – a beautiful time of year in Baltimore. And guess what? The Baltimore Orioles are out of town that entire week.

08/20/13 A second Izod IndyCar Series race in May at Indianapolis Motor Speedway is under consideration by track management, and Team Penske driver Will Power supports the idea.

IMS officials have said they are gathering information about staging an IndyCar road course race on either the first or second weekend of May as a way to build momentum for the Indianapolis 500, which is set for May 27, 2014. A feasibility test is expected to be held Sept. 4.

“If it brings more people out [to IMS], I think it's a good idea, provided it doesn't take away from the main race, which I don't think it will," Power said Monday. “I think the key is to get more people out on those [slow] days. You don't really have a bump day anymore [and they need] to get more people out during the month or the two weeks that we're there.

“That would be interesting. It would be cool." AutoWeek

[Editor's Note: If they hold a 2nd IndyCar race at IMS it needs to close out the season, it needs to be on the oval, it needs to be under the lights and it needs to be on Labor Day weekend Saturday night. The new IndyCar puts on a spectacular show on the flat 2.5-mile oval. How can you not see that is the best way to showcase the series as a season ending grand finale. This is not rocket science. There it is staring the IndyCar brass right smack in the face. We're going to have a headache the rest of the day, but we just have to do this ]
