Sprint Cup practice delayed by rain at Watkins Glen

The first Sprint Cup practice Friday was delayed by rain at Watkins Glen International.

Heavy rains soaked the 2.45-mile road course with the first 90-minute practice session scheduled for noon Eastern on Friday.

The Nationwide Series teams are scheduled to practice from 1:40-3:50 p.m. and then Cup teams are scheduled to return to the track from 4-5:30 p.m.

The showers are supposed to dissipate later in the afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

Sunset is not scheduled until 8:19 p.m., and NASCAR would like to get the teams practice on Friday with qualifying already scheduled for both series on Saturday prior to the Nationwide race.

The Cup teams will race Sunday, starting at 1 p.m.
