Saturday Morning Update from Iowa (Update)

UPDATE Tony Kanaan posted the best time today's IndyCar practice session with an average speed of 184.063 miles per hour. Kanaan's speed set a track record by more than 2 miles per hour.

Will Power, Marco Andretti and Helio Castroneves were next as Chevrolet cars too the top fours spots and seven of the top 10. Scott Dixon was the fastest Honda in fifth place.

Overall, the 24 car field was separated by less a second with Ana Beatriz's 24th place time just 0.88 seconds off Kanaan. Results here.

IndyCar Series qualifying begins at 3 p.m. Brian C. reporting from Iowa

06/22/13 It's a few minutes after 9 a.m. here at Iowa Speedway. The temperature is a sticky 89 degrees. While there is a possibility of rain tomorrow clear skies are expected today.

And a very busy day it will be. The Firestone Indy Lights cars will take to the track in about 20 minutes for a 45 minutes session, with the Indy cars following them at 10:45. The one hour 15 minute practice session will be the only track time for the IndyCar Series before qualifying at 3 and the hat races this evening.

Of course, the format for this year's heat races have changed somewhat with the series awarding points to the top 12 in the heats. While some are confused by the format, I'll try to make it real simple.

1. The top-6 from today's qualifying session will automatically advance to Heat 3 and start in positions 1-6.

2. The remainder of the field will be divided into two groups. Heat 1 will be qualifiers 8, 10, 12, etc, Heat 2 will feature qualifiers 7, 9, 11, etc.

3. The top-2 finishers in Heats 1 and 2, will advance to Heat 3.

Check-in with AR1 throughout the day for updates from Iowa.
