Security heightened at IMS for Indy 500

State Police want to remind race fans of the heightened security at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

This year officers have already had to deal with a number of unattended items.

"We've had our explosive ordinance disposal teams out here along with the K-9's and we had calls last week during the qualifications of unattended packages, unauthorized packages left somewhere. When we go take care of those and clear them we are going to remove them from the scene and they will be gone," said Sgt. Rich Myers with Indiana State Police.

Sgt. Myers says the increase in security is partly due to the Boston Marathon bombings.

Police also want to remind race fans of the IMS cooler policy. Coolers larger than 14 x 14 x 18 will not be allowed into the track on race day.

Fans will be turned away at the gate and told to place larger sized coolers back in their vehicles. The policy ensures that coolers carried into the track will fit under the owners seat.
