Whincup takes race 4, wins 3 of 4 in Austin (Update)

UPDATE 68,891 USA fans over 3-days enjoyed V8 Supercars for the first time at Circuit of The Americas

05/19/13 For Holden's Jamie Whincup, it was an American dream.

For Ford's Will Davison, it was a star-spangled spanner in the works for his V8 Supercar Championship hopes.

Whincup swept to victory in three of the four races on the V8s' debut in the United States – a resounding success for the sport with more than 68,000 attending over the three-day event in Austin, Texas.

But while Davison went into the weekend Whincup's nearest Championship challenger, he left the Circuit of the Americas having lost second place.

Davison failed to finish the fourth race won by Whincup on Monday (AEST) after an early tangle with Holden driver Scott McLaughlin wrecked the right side of his car.

He finished fourth, ninth and 12th in the weekend's other races.

That allowed Whincup to skip away to a 142-point championship lead, and teammate Lowndes to leapfrog Davison into second place on a successful weekend for Red Bull Racing.

Lockwood Racing Holden driver Fabian Coulthard won race three in the only respite from Whincup's domination in the sport's first foray into the United States.

Lowndes finished second and Whincup third in that race, but stewards were probing a possible mid-race breach by Coulthard which could cost him the victory.

Stewards said Coulthard was under investigation over failing to maintain his speed at a restart following a safety car period – a breach of race rules.

In a dismal weekend for Ford Performance Racing, Davison's teammate Mark Winterbottom had his hopes of winning race three cruelled by a botched pit stop.

The problem changing the rear tire cost Winterbottom the race lead, and plunged him to seventh.

It followed a similar horror pit stop at the previous round in Perth which cost Winterbottom multiple positions.

Whincup now leads teammate Craig Lowndes by 142 points in the Championship.

The next event, the SKYCITY Triple Crown at Hidden Valley Raceway in Darwin, will be held from June 14-16.
