Schmidt trying to get 2 cars in before adding a third (2nd Update)

UPDATE #2 Katherine Legge, who will drive the Honda-powered No. 81 Schmidt Peterson Motorsports-prepared car, is the 34th driver entered. She's expected to participate in the morning practice session May 19 and make a qualifying attempt later in the day. Bump Day qualifications begin, weather permitting, at noon (ET).

"I'm psyched to get back in the car, especially at Indy because this is such a special place," Legge said. "I owe a huge thank you to Honda, Firestone, the IZOD IndyCar Series and especially Schmidt Peterson Motorsports for pulling this together in the last minute to get the car on track.

"I was talking with Sam (Schmidt) in 2011 about driving one of his cars, and I'm so excited to finally get in one of them and work with the entire team in addition to Simon (Pagenaud) and Tristan (Vautier)."

Legge, 32, is the fourth female entered, joining Simona de Silvestro, Ana Beatriz and Pippa Mann. If all four qualifying, it would tie 2010 and 2011 for the most females in the Indy 500.

05/18/13 Sam Schmidt is content to wait another day before hiring a third driver for the Indianapolis 500.

The owner of Schmidt Peterson Motorsports told The Associated Press on Friday he has not hired a driver for the No. 99 car but might if his two other drivers safely qualify Saturday. Schmidt's other drivers are Simon Pagenaud, last year's IndyCar rookie of the year, and rookie Tristan Vautier. Both are from France.

Schmidt says a handful of drivers, including Britain's Katherine Legge, are interested in driving. Schmidt does not yet have sponsorship for the car, either.
