Body of missing race fan Nick Bower found

The body of missing Talladega race fan Nick Bower was found Tuesday, ending a 10-day search for the 28-year-old Georgia native.

Bower’s body was found in a creek about a mile-and-a-half from the Talladega Superspeedway.

“No foul play is suspected at this time and verification of the cause of death is pending," Talladega Sheriff Jimmy Kilgore said in a news release.

The Anniston Star reported that Talladega County deputy coroner Larry Seals, said Bower’s body was spotted at 11:49 a.m. CT by an Etowah County Sheriff’s Office helicopter in the Choccolocco Creek.

“At approximately noon today searchers located the body of Nicolas Bower in the creek at the Jackson Shoals area downstream from the old dam," Kilgore said.

“This area was a short distance east of the bridge on Jackson Trace Road. … The body had been concealed by tall grass on the middle of the creek where he was spotted today."

The sheriff said that the remains were turned over to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy.

Bower had been reported missing since May 4, having last been seen around 11 p.m. during a stormy Saturday night in a campground outside the racetrack.

Bower had gone to Talladega with his girlfriend, and because they didn’t get their tent up before the rain, they had planned to sleep in his truck. When she awoke at 12:30 a.m., she noticed he was not there and never saw him again.
