FR3.5 champion Frijns doesn’t have money to buy GP2 seat

Robin Frijns

Robin Frijns will not be on the grid for the opening races of this year's GP2 campaign in Malaysia, the Dutchman and Sauber reserve confirmed to GPUpdate.net on Tuesday. Despite impressing for both Trident and Russian Time throughout testing, the respective outfits have now confirmed rival drivers for the upcoming season.

"I am currently empty-handed," Frijns explained to GPUpdate.net. "It is ultimately about money, which I don't have. I'm not going to start a season if I'm not sure whether I can finish it. I do not want to do half a job. When I do something, I want to do it well."

When asked if there will be opportunities in other racing categories, Frijns replied:

"I have lately been fully focused on the GP2 Series. I have no clue. But because most seasons already at the point of starting, I guess my chances are frankly quite low."

Frijns hopes to be traveling to a number of Formula 1 races with Sauber this year, although the Maastricht-born driver's schedule is yet to be confirmed by the team.
