Junior Johnson’s home, farm, race shop being sold at public auction

NASCAR Hall of Famer Junior Johnson is auctioning off his 150-acre home and cattle farm in Yadkin County, N.C., including the famous race shop that helped make Johnson a NASCAR legend.

Johnson, who was inducted into the inaugural class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2010, won 50 Cup races as a NASCAR driver and his Junior Johnson & Associates teams won 132 races and six Cup championships with drivers such as Hall of Famers Cale Yarborough and Darrell Waltrip. Johnson’s teams operated out of the Yadkin County, N.C. shop being auctioned.

The property is being auctioned because Johnson and his wife, Lisa, are downsizing and have bought a new home in Charlotte, N.C.

Johnson’s farm and estate will be auctioned on Aug. 7 while his farm equipment and memorabilia will be sold during a separate auction on July 31.

Johnson’s Hamptonville Estate includes his custom-built home as well as his office, race shop, hay barns, equipment buildings and a guesthouse. It also includes the famous breakfast building where Johnson cooked breakfast daily for area residents and NASCAR personalities.

"Our family leaves behind many great memories and times here in Hamptonville," Johnson said in a statement. “We wish the new owners nothing but the best in this extraordinary estate."

"This is a great opportunity for Junior's fans and friends to own a piece of his history," Johnson family spokesman Keith Barnwell said.

Johnson, 81, served a stint in federal prison for running moonshine before becoming a racer. He became an American folk hero when author Tom Wolfe penned him as “The Last American Hero." He continues to be active in business with his own signature “white lightning" distilled under the name Junior Johnson’s Midnight Moon. His original moonshine still is in the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

The auction is being handled by Iron Horse Auction Company, Inc. of Rockingham, N.C. Sporting News
