Wilson avoids penalty

IndyCar's race director said on Tuesday that he considered giving Justin Wilson a penalty for hitting Dragon Racing crew members during last week's practice session in Toronto.

A penalty would have come, IndyCar's Beaux Barfield said, if the incident would have occurred during a race.

“Certainly in the race it would be [a penalty]," Barfield said. “I kicked it around and thought about it, but there were more reasons to not penalize him than there were reasons to penalize him, which is probably the easiest way to put it."

Barfield said it would have been “an insult to injury" to penalize Wilson. Several crew members who didn't see the Dale Coyne Racing car coming were knocked down, with Dragon's Chuck Humon—who was kneeling to start Sébastien Bourdais' car when he was struck—suffering a small broken bone in his right foot. Miraculously, no one sustained serious injuries.

Wilson apologized several times, saying he felt “horrible" about the incident that occurred when his car got stuck in gear and his brakes locked. AutoWeek
