Pagenaud hits bird while turning laps at Indy’s rookie orientation

Indianapolis 500 rookie Simon Pagenaud received a rude welcome to the speedway Thursday. During the rookie orientation program, Pagenaud inadvertently hit a bird while driving around the 2.5-mile oval at speeds topping 210 mph. It wasn't clear when the collision occurred, but the impact caused a significant dent in the screen protecting the radiator.

Crew members scrambled to fix the problem as Pagenaud attempted to pass all three phases of his rookie test.

The French driver has had a spectacular start to the season. He's finished in the top six three times, including a season-best second at Long Beach, and he's fifth in points after four races.

Ten drivers have the option of driving Thursday. Practice for all drivers begins Saturday and the 500 will be run May 27.
