When the going gets tough, the tough get going

Randy Bernard understands that a leader must lead in the toughest of times

IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard told The Associated Press this week that he decided to cancel the Las Vegas race after the crash. Some drivers initially wanted to continue, something of a tradition in racing.

"I felt that I didn't really care about tradition on this," Bernard said. "I felt like no driver in their right mind could have a clear head knowing that one of their friends had just died, and I felt this is where I needed to make a stand and say, 'No.' "

Bernard is determined to be the leader IndyCar needs in the difficult period ahead.

"In tough times, that's when you have to be focused," he said. "You have to lead, and I know this is a time I have to make sure I am going to be very decisive, very articulate and be a leader.

"In tough times is where you build your character; it's not in good times."
