Indy Lights Test For Skip Barber National Champion

A year ago, Skip Barber Racing School and Bryan Herta Autosport announced a partnership dedicated to identifying and developing talented and young race car drivers. On February 23-24 2011, Bryan Herta Autosport conducted a Firestone Indy Lights test with Spencer Pigot, the winner of the 2010 BFGoodrich/Skip Barber National presented by Mazda Championship. The two day test took place at Palm Beach International Raceway, and Pigot’s performance impressed all present.

Although the new car and increase in power have been a hindrance for some, the seventeen year old Florida native quickly adjusted to the car and completed fast laps in no time. “Spencer did a great job driving our Indy Lights car today," said team owner Bryan Herta. “This is obviously a big step up in power and downforce, but his time in the Skip Barber National Series clearly prepared him well and he was comfortable and confident in the car immediately."

“Driving the Indy Lights car was an incredible experience!" said Pigot. “It was great to have someone like Bryan there to give me all of the advice and tips I needed…Driving this car is something I didn’t think would happen until much later in my career. I have to thank Skip Barber Racing School and Bryan Herta Autosport for giving me this opportunity."

In clinching the 2010 Skip Barber National championship, Pigot received a scholarship to compete in the full 2011 season of the Cooper Tires Presents the USF2000 powered by Mazda. Pigot will be racing with Andretti Autosport alongside teammate Zach Veach. “Spencer is clearly a driver that is going places," said Herta. “We will watch his progress this season in the USF2000 Championship with Andretti Autosport closely and hope we can see him back in one of our cars in the future."

Throughout the 2010 race season, Bryan Herta Autosport gave young Skip Barber National drivers a firsthand inside look at the race team and drivers, hosting them at Indy Lights events. Bryan Herta Autosport also proudly displayed the Skip Barber Racing School logo on the team’s two season-long entries as well as the team’s inaugural entry in the Indianapolis 500. Bryan Herta Autosport and Skip Barber Racing School aim to continue joint work developing the next generation of open wheel racing stars.
