Magnussen to Carlin for British F3

Kevin Magnussen will contest the Cooper Tires British F3 Series with Carlin next year, following a successful season in German Formula 3 in 2010. The 18 year-old, who is the son of former Formula 1 racer Jan Magnussen, is already an F3 race winner in the German and Euro Series championships.

Despite only just having turned 18, Magnussen has already completed one season of Formula 3 in Germany. The young Dane took eight podiums in 2010, including three race wins to finish third in the championship standings. Magnussen also contested one event in F3 Euro Series in Valencia, finishing seventh in his first ever race and winning his second from second on the grid.

Before racing in German F3, Magnussen raced in the competitive Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup, where he finished seventh following a consistent season.

Kevin follows in the footsteps of his famous father Jan Magnussen, who was British F3 champion in 1994 and whose record of the most British F3 wins in one season (14) remains undefeated. Magnussen senior went on to race in Formula 1, making one outing for McLaren and racing for two seasons with the Stewart F1 team. Jan has since gone on to win the ALMS and Le Mans on four occasions for Corvette Racing and become the most winning driver in Europe ever.

Kevin has already completed three days in the Carlin F3 car, testing two days at Donington and one day in icy conditions at Brands Hatch in preparation for the 2011 season.

Speaking about his new team Kevin said, “I am very pleased to be joining Carlin in British F3. The championship has a very strong history and is still producing drivers that are progressing all the way to F1. With Carlin I know that I will have a very competitive car from the start of the season. I’ve really enjoyed the tests I’ve completed so far and already feel part of the team. I want to thank Carlin but also McLaren for fantastic advice and support and my great sponsors to whom I owe everything – Jack & Jones, Nordea Bank Luxembourg, Puma and Danish Automobile Sports Union / Team Denmark."

Dorte Riis Madsen, Magnussen’s manager is glad to see the 18 year-old join the reigning British F3 champions, adding, "Carlin has proactively pursued Kevin since he was 15 years old. Back then it was very tempting to accept an offer from such a top team but we assessed that it was too early for Kevin to start racing in the F3 series. Kevin needed to grow and mature at his own pace so he could be as well prepared as possible for the challenges ahead. His goal is not only to become an F1 driver. His goal is to be the best in the world. Trevor Carlin fully accepted our decision. Since then he has recognized that we did indeed make the right decision – not to push Kevin too quickly – despite his obvious talent. Trevor's understanding and acceptance of this gives him tremendous credibility in our opinion. We know that Carlin will do everything they possibly can to take full advantage of Kevin's talent."

Speaking about his newest recruit Trevor Carlin added, “We’ve been in touch with Kevin for a couple of years now and we’ve been very impressed with his progression up the motorsport ladder. He’s been very sensible in his approach; quietly learning the F3 ropes in Germany before making an assault on the British title. We’ve been very pleased with Kevin’s pace in testing and I’m sure we’ll see another Magnussen on the podium in Britain again very soon."
