Tony George puts Indy estate up for sale

It's a low-key "for sale" sign, given the high-profile celebrities who are selling their home.

But Tony and Laura George's 12-plus acres in the 8000 block of Spring Mill Road on the Far Northside is available for purchase, at least unofficially. George's family is handling the marketing for a few months before it's officially listed, said his daughter-in-law, Heather Carpenter.

The sign went up Friday.

"We're doing this for a couple of months and then we'll officially list it," Carpenter said. "The market's not very good right now, so we thought we'd put a sign in the yard."

The Georges, co-owners of Vision Racing, declined to disclose an asking price.

The home was last assessed at $2.9 million, according to Homes.com.

The gated, heavily wooded estate just north of Williams Creek includes a 14,000-square-foot main residence built in 1993. The acreage also holds a roughly 3,000-square foot guest cottage, a tennis court, three-stall horse barn with grazing pastures, a fishing pond and a swimming pool.

Many famous guests have walked the property, including former U.S. first lady Laura Bush, who attended a private fundraiser at the home in 2004. A marketing Web site offers the potential buyer a chance to "experience your own piece of serenity, right in the middle of the city."

"Masterfully built, no expenses were spared allowing exquisite attention to detail," the site reads.

The Georges resided at the home during Tony's tenure as president and chief executive officer at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. That job ended in controversy in June when family members on the speedway's board asked him to step down from the lead role with the business and other Hulman-George family entities.

So, why is the couple selling the estate?

The couple are simply empty nesters, Carpenter said, after seeing off their daughter, Lauren, the last of three kids raised on the land, to the University of Notre Dame this fall. Lauren, also a co-owner of Vision Racing, graduated from Park Tudor High School in May.

"It is a lot of house for two people," Carpenter said. More at Indy Star
