Red Bull moves to prevent tram interference repeat

(GMM) Red Bull has taken steps this weekend to prevent a repeat of its gearbox failure in last year's Singapore grand prix.

After the inaugural night race in the Asian city-state, the team suspected that static electricity caused by a passing underground tram could have caused Mark Webber's gearbox to select two gears simultaneously and fail.

The actual cause of the failure was never confirmed, but as a precaution, metal plates have been fitted to the underneath of the gearboxes of the cars driven this weekend by Webber and his teammate Sebastian Vettel.

It is believed that a similar solution has also been adopted by Red Bull's sister team Toro Rosso, after a nearly identical problem was encountered earlier in the Singapore weekend last year.
