Button rejects need for ‘mind manager’

If Button loses the title it will be the ultimate choke of all time

(GMM) Jenson Button has rejected suggestions he would boost his chances of securing the 2009 world championship by employing a 'mind-manager'.

Sir Jackie Stewart is a famous proponent of using external help for the all-important role in sports of psychology, and Button revealed at Monza on Saturday that Stewart's former protégé Rubens Barrichello has indeed used a mind-manager.

"Since he got rid of him he's gone quicker," the Briton laughed.

Many observers believe it has been Button's inability to cope with the pressure of leading the world championship that has contributed to his recent slump in form.

But the 29-year-old does not believe a mind manager would help him.

"I don't know what anyone could possibly say that's going to help me," he told reporters in Italy.

"Mind management? I know what's going on in my head. You don't. So why should I listen to you? It wouldn't work for me.

"I'll say, 'I've been here for 10 years, you haven't. So what can you help me with?'.

"As my old man (John) just says 'Go and kick some ass!"

Button denied that his stance is an exercise in not being open-minded enough.

"I am pretty open minded with many things, but there are certain things I am pretty stubborn about. When it comes to that sort of thing I am pretty stubborn."
