|Ousted FIA president Max Mosley won't be around much longer to save F1 from itself. Now the rats will be running the asylum.|
FIA president Max Mosley, easily the most intelligent person involved with F1, has been forced out of the sport he was instrumental in making a huge success after this year by F1 teams with backing from huge corporations. Mosley was forcing major cost-cutting down their throats in an effort to save F1 from itself in this sagging economy.
It is largely agreed that F1 team principals are fat cats living the high life on the money from major corporations. And the small Brawn team has shown that you can beat the big teams and put on a good show, even without a big budget. Essentially F1 has been proven to be 5 times more expensive than it needs to be.
F1's governing body on Wednesday suggested it is the bosses of other manufacturer-backed formula one teams who are to blame for BMW's decision to quit the sport.
A statement issued by the FIA (led by Mosley) in the wake of the Munich carmaker's decision said it is "not surprised" by the news.
After Honda pulled out late last year, Mosley moved to introduce budget cap rules that led to the F1 carmakers' group FOTA, of which BMW was a member, threatening to set up a breakaway championship.
"Had these regulations not been so strongly opposed by a number of team principals, the withdrawal of BMW and further such announcements in the future might have been avoided," the FIA said on Wednesday.
The FIA said that the alternative rules, devised as a compromise to the budget cap in order to avoid the FOTA exodus, "should make it easier for new teams to enter and enable existing ones to participate on much reduced budgets".
It is now rumored that Renault and Toyota may follow Honda and BMW out of F1. A new Concorde Agreement, that would bind the teams to the sport until 2012, still has not been ratified.
The FIA said it hopes the compromise rules are good enough.
"Hopefully it will be enough to prevent further withdrawals and provide a solid foundation for formula one," the Max Mosley-led body added.
Mosley pushed for and got KERS approved in F1. While many teams were not intelligent enough to get KERS to work, McLaren has now shown it can not only work well, but give a team the edge to win a race. This technology will someday make it onto passenger cars.
F1 is an expensive rat hole. Mosley was right, costs are too high, but the teams voted against him and pushed him out. Lucky he got low-cost engine supplier Cosworth to come in and supply engines before his departure. As the big companies drop out of F1 one-by-one, Cosworth will save the day and Mosley will have been vindicated.
Meanwhile the rats (FOTA and the yes-man they get to be FIA President) will now be running the asylum. Mark C.
