Hegewald takes clean sweep in Spa qualifying two
Canadian Robert Wickens was second, with Andy Soucek in third. Young Briton Alex Brundle took a superb fourth position, with Frenchman Julien Jousse in fifth.
With the session commencing in slightly damp conditions, many drivers started with old tires, before setting their quickest laps on fresh rubber in the closing stages. Hegewald was the first to set a benchmark time in the final ten minutes, and it was enough to secure his second F2 pole.
Qualifying had to be red flagged after six minutes when Armaan Ebrahim went off at Eau Rouge. Henry Surtees wasn't able to avoid collecting Ebrahim's stricken car on the race track and there was a five minute delay before the session was restarted.
Red Bull-backed Wickens makes a return to the front row of the grid, after falling just 0.165s of the pole time. Andy Soucek was third, a position he held for much of the session until Alex Brundle squeezed him back down to fourth with just five minutes to go. The Spaniard responded instantly to post his second top three qualifying result of the weekend.
Brundle and Jousse followed, whilst Milos Pavlovic enjoyed his best ever F2 qualifying by taking sixth. The fourth row for tomorrow's (Sunday) race will be an all Red Bull affair, with Mikhail Aleshin lining up in front of championship leader Mirko Bortolotti.
Round five of the FIA Formula Two Championship will take place later today (Saturday) at 13:10 local time, whilst round six commences at 15:15 tomorrow.
Tobias Hegewald said: "The weekend has been perfect so far! I just have to concentrate on these two races – if I do well then we will see about the championship. I have been at the top of every session so far, and hopefully that will continue in today's race."
Robert Wickens said: "Qualifying went better than yesterday for sure. I found just over two tenths of a second, and we made a step forward with the handling of the car after making some last minute changes. It's good to be second rather than third – it may only be one place but it's 10 meters up the grid and it gives me a better shot of leading after the first corner."
Andy Soucek said: "It was not my best session actually, as I made a few mistakes and caught traffic on my two best laps. I'm a bit disappointed with third because the car was feeling very, very good, and I'm pretty sure if I hadn’t hit traffic and made a mistake at La Source I could have been pole. It's still good to be third though, and it gives me a good chance of scoring well this weekend."
