Hamlin leads rain delayed practice

Denny Hamlin led a rain-delayed Nextel Cup practice session Friday at Watkins Glen International, turning a lap of 121.528 mph in Joe Gibbs Racing's No. 11 Chevrolet. The session was delayed about 30 minutes because of rain, and NASCAR extended the practice to 1:30 p.m. EDT. Busch Series practice was pushed back five minutes to 1:35 p.m. EDT and will end as scheduled at 3.

Jimmie Johnson was second at 121.484 in Hendrick Motorsports' No. 48 Chevrolet, with Ron Fellows (Hall of Fame Racing) third at 121.346. Jamie McMurray (Roush Fenway Racing) was fourth, with Jeff Gordon (Hendrick) fifth.

Sixth through 10th were Jeremy Mayfield (Bill Davis Racing), Juan Pablo Montoya (Chip Ganassi Racing), P.J. Jones (Michael Waltrip Racing), Patrick Carpentier (Valvoline Evernham Racing) and Tony Stewart (JGR). Mayfield, Jones and Carpentier all have to make the race via qualifying. Scenedaily.com
