GM announces plans to export $700M of goods to China

General Motors Corp. today said it plans to export $700 million worth of U.S.-made Cadillacs and automotive components to China over the next three years.

The Detroit-based automaker made the announcement at the Ritz-Carlton in Dearborn during a public meeting with Ma Xiuhong, deputy minister of commerce of the People’s Republic of China, Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, and representatives from Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Group.

GM’s China operations have imported about $3.5 billion worth of vehicles, components, equipment and machinery from North America during the past 10 years.

The announcement comes as the auto industry in China is growing faster than in any other country in the world. GM sold 877,000 vehicles in China last year, second only to its 4.1 million sales in the United States.
