Davis upset with Mayfield

Team owner Bill Davis was upset with Jeremy Mayfield, who failed to qualify for the Daytona 500 despite fast times in testing and in practices at the track. Davis said Mayfield's No. 36 car was good enough to post a top five or top six finish. "It's just awful," Davis said. "It's one of the worst things to ever happen to us because it's one thing to not have speed and just struggle and not get the job done. But we had a great car, as far as speed goes, and we didn't get it done on qualifying day and then didn't do the job, didn't drive it well enough to race our way in." Sporting News
