Knoxville to consider SAFER Barrier

Knoxville Raceway race director Ralph Capitani said this afternoon that track officials will look into the viability of installing SAFER Barrier walls in Turns 1, 2, 3 and 4 at the half-mile dirt track.

Steve King, a sprint car driver from Jetmore, Kan., died Thursday of head injuries suffered in a wreck during a preliminary feature race on Wednesday.

King, 33, collided with the Turn 3 fence after something broke on his car, officials said.

"The danger is when you go head-on into the wall," Capitani said. "If it's a glancing blow, it kicks you out. That danger comes at the midpoints of the turns, so we're going to take a look at it."
