F1 not sold

Contrary to reports, the coveted 'F1' car registration plate was not sold at auction last month. Ireland's 'News Letter' publication reported that the plate, owned by Essex County Council (UK), did not reach its reserve price despite bids of several hundred thousand pounds at the Goodwood Festival of Speed event.

It 'remains with the council,' the media report insisted, hinting at a reserve price somewhere in the range of an extraordinary $600,000. Essex's '1F' plate did, though, sell — for $255,000.
