Could Kyle Busch wind up driving for his own Cup team?

UPDATE Kyle Busch will team with his brother Kurt at KBM this year in the Nationwide Series. "I was feeling pretty good about our ownership chances in Nationwide, that's going to be hard to beat," J.D. Gibbs said about the Busch brothers pairing."

Joe Gibbs said he wasn't in the discussions of Kyle racing for his own team. "I will say that I was not in that meeting or we would not be doing this," Gibbs said. "These two (Busch and J.D. Gibbs) got together and somehow we are now racing against him."

As for the day when KBM might be elevated to a Sprint Cup operation, Busch sees it down the road because of all the current complications associated with such a move. "That's obviously something I look forward to doing," Busch said. "The Cup side is kind of difficult just due to the constrictions that NASCAR puts on all of us with me driving for Joe Gibbs Racing. Essentially I could have one team, but if JGR ever went to four teams I would have to shut mine down so that makes it tough." Motor Racing Network

01/23/12 Kyle Busch’s announcement Thursday that he will field a Nationwide Series car for himself and his brother, Kurt, this season was a significant development.

And not just for the Nationwide Series, which will no doubt benefit from the excitement and exposure the two volatile brothers will bring to the series.

And not just for Kyle Busch Motorsports, which will no doubt dominate the series and eventually realize its goal of winning an owners championship.

But also for Kyle Busch the driver.

Busch is taking the organization that he started a few years ago to the Nationwide Series this year, with he and his brother, Kurt, sharing the driving duties.

Backed back his own team, Kyle will continue to dominate the series, winning races and continuing his assault on the series record book.

Where will it all lead?

Likely to the Sprint Cup Series, potentially making Kyle the series’ next high-profile owner/driver.

Kyle admitted Thursday that the long-term goal for Kyle Busch Motorsports is to build the team for a possible move to Cup.

“One day," he said. “Certainly it takes a hell of a lot more money than running a Nationwide deal to go Cup racing competitively. It’s a step in the right direction, for sure. That’s what we’re here for. We want to see this place be around for a long time.

“This is something that I feel like is near and dear to my heart. I didn’t inherit this. This is something that I’ve been building. I’ve been really trying to build all of this and put it together and hire the right people and get the right people in the right places that make it successful."

If Busch succeeds in taking his team to the Cup series one day, he, of course, likely would be the driver. His teammate, perhaps, could wind up being his brother, Kurt.

It seems like a natural progression for the two high-spirited, headstrong drivers. More at SceneDaily.com
