Windscreen likely saved Hunter-Reay from serious injury at Barber

The Halo and Windscreen on the current IndyCar likely saved Ryan Hunter-Reay from serious injury at Barber Motorsports Park this weekend.

He was this close from getting his head wacked by Newgarden’s right front wheel.

The accident was triggered when Newgarden’s left rear tire caught the grass and spun him broadside across the track.

Colton Herta’s Andretti Autosport car, struck the Penske, then teammate Hunter-Reay swerved right and braked to try and squeeze past, but hit the front half of the Penske.

“Well that was a weekend to forget,” wrote the 2012 IndyCar champion and 2014 Indy 500 winner.

“We struggled with drivetrain (straight line speed) issues through practice and qualifying.

“Then our race ended before it really started, taken out in first lap pile-up. Extremely grateful for the IndyCar Aeroscreen. Likely saved my life.”

Similar situation in F1

Both Valtteri Bottas and George Russell got away with their crash at Imola. That Russell’s left front wheel almost slammed into the Finn’s cockpit is something most will have seen, but the halo on the Williams also headed off a large chunk of Bottas’ car.
