IndyCar: Changes to how pit boxes are assigned each race

IndyCar has updated its rule book for the 2022 season, and it includes a change to how Pit Box locations are assigned on pit road.

Previously, pit box assignments have been done based on the previous event’s qualifying order, with the highest qualified driver being assigned the pit box nearest the end of pit road.

The rest of the drivers were then placed in the adjacent pit box based on the starting grid from the previous race.

With the new rule change, each driver will get to choose any available pit box for a race weekend.  The choosing order is determined by the qualifying order from the previous event, with the pole-sitter receiving the first pick.

However, for St. Pete this coming weekend, last year’s procedures will dictate the pit box order, with the assignment of pit locations being set in order based on last year’s points standings.  Since Alex Palou is the defending champion, he will be assigned the pit box nearest to pit out in St. Petersburg in a few days time.
