IndyCar: More Ovals on IndyCar Schedule in the Future

Roger Penske, the owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the NTT INDYCAR Series, spoke with the media after the IMSA Battle on the Bricks announcement this morning.  Making decisions to increase revenues at IMS, the returning IMSA event will have all of the infield available for camping in September of 2023.

Penske also owns a NASCAR team and having the Brickyard weekend was an idea he entertained to bring the NASCAR and NTT INDYCAR Series together on the same weekend to showcase both series.

When asked if the  NASCAR Xfinity and Cup series would continue to race on the road course instead of the oval, Penske replied ‘Yes, that is the intention.”

Asked if there could be any other NASCAR/INDYCAR weekends, Penske replied that his staff is always having conversations with other promoters, but as of right now, there are no additional plans for a joint race anywhere else.

The Captain talked about future plans for IndyCar.

“In my perspective, Iowa was a home run.  Hy-Vee, their team, their people.  We have never seen someone supporting a race as a sponsor come in with the manpower, not just dollars, but the manpower and the promotion.  Off the charts.”

“If I looked at INDYCAR today and said where would we want to run?  I want to run on more ovals.  I think that is the strength of our sport, that we are running on street and road courses, and ovals.”

“Yes, the roots of this business are kids running on dirt and running other cars and coming here (to IMS)and being able to run for the biggest trophy there is in the world in racing. ”

“We are looking at other ovals.  There are different options. I do not have anything right now to say that we are ready to sign.  But something for me, long term,  is to keep this balance of permanent circuits, city circuits,  and ovals.  These are the things I want to be sure we have a good balance.”

AR1 asked Penske if we could see another race at Michigan International Speedway.  He smiled without an answer.  I would think that is a possibility someday.
