NASCAR News: Chase Briscoe wins Cup pole in Iowa

Chase Briscoe (pictured) wheeled his No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota to the top of the NASCAR Cup Series qualifying board Saturday afternoon at Iowa Speedway and will lead the field to the green flag Sunday in the Iowa Corn 350 Powered by Ethanol.

Briscoe captured his Busch Light Pole Award of the season, tops among all Cup Series pilots. The No. 19 raced a circuit at 136.933 mph (23.004 seconds), surpassing William Byron’s No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, which clocked a 136.435 mph lap.

Kyle Larson qualified third at 136.429 mph, followed by Austin Cindric (136.358) and Brad Keselowski (136.252) to complete the top five.

Defending Iowa winner Ryan Blaney (136.063), Carson Hocevar (136.016), Chase Elliott (135.981), AJ Allmendinger (135.928) and Justin Haley (135.788) rounded out the top 10.

Kyle Busch, piloting the No. 8 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet, wrecked with 8:45 remaining during the opening 25-minute practice session, losing control entering Turn 1 and hitting the outside wall head-on. Busch completed 17 laps during practice, completing the 17th-fastest lap (133.147 mph) before the incident. The No. 8 team will transition to a backup car, RCR announced on social media.
