MotoGP News: Misano Sprint – Bezzecchi Claims Victory as Marquez’s Streak Crashes Out
Marco Bezzecchi (pictured) delivered a home-hero triumph in the Misano Sprint Race, ending Marc Marquez’s remarkable run of eight consecutive Saturday wins—and 14 out of 15 this season—with a dramatic high-speed crash from the lead.
As Marquez walked away unscathed to a roar of applause from the passionate Italian crowd—marking his first DNF since COTA—pole-sitter Bezzecchi had to hold off a fierce challenge from Alex Márquez, fresh off his Barcelona Grand Prix victory last weekend.
The Aprilia rider kept the charging Gresini Ducati at bay to secure his first Sprint win since Assen in 2023.
Fabio Di Giannantonio fended off his VR46 teammate Marco Bezzecchi to round out the podium, while Yamaha’s front-row starter Fabio Quartararo was another notable casualty in the gravel. Marc’s teammate Francesco Bagnaia, meanwhile, struggled to 13th.
Augusto Fernández salvaged some cheer for Yamaha, guiding their new V4 prototype to a maiden podium finish in eighth.
Race Report
Bezzecchi had earned pole with the quickest lap in Saturday morning’s qualifying for the San Marino Grand Prix. He held firm into Turn 1 under pressure from Alex Márquez, who soon slipped behind the championship leader, Marc Márquez, just a couple of corners later.
The Italian gradually pulled away from the rampant Márquez, only for the Ducati ace—nicknamed the “Ant of Cervera”—to strike back on Lap 6 and snatch the lead.
Márquez’s time at the front was heartbreakingly brief: under intense pursuit from Bezzecchi’s Aprilia and his brother Alex lurking close behind, he tumbled out of contention moments later.
With the factory Ducati sidelined, Bezzecchi rebuilt his advantage over the pursuing Gresini bike, crossing the line exactly one second clear of Alex Márquez for a popular victory on home soil.
