NASCAR News: Goodyear Introduces New Right-Side Tire at Kansas Speedway
This weekend at Kansas Speedway, Goodyear will debut a new right-side tire for both the NASCAR Cup Series and Xfinity Series, aiming to address ongoing tire performance challenges.
The tire will be paired with a proven left-side Goodyear Racing Eagle, previously used at similar 1.5-mile tracks like Charlotte, Michigan, Indianapolis, and Darlington for the Cup Series, and Las Vegas, Charlotte, Texas, and Nashville for the Xfinity Series. This tire combination will also be used at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on October 11-12.
For the Cup Series’ Hollywood Casino 400 Presented by ESPN Bet on Sunday, teams will receive 10 tire sets: eight for the 267-lap, 400-mile race, one for practice, and one for qualifying that carries over to the race.
Xfinity Series teams competing in the Kansas Lottery 300 on Saturday will get six sets: four for the 200-lap, 300-mile race, one for practice, and one for qualifying.
“Kansas presents unique challenges with its smooth surface, multiple grooves, and history of close finishes, but recent races have highlighted significant tire wear,” said Justin Fantozzi, Goodyear’s operations manager for global race tires.
“The new right-side tire, with updated construction, gives crew chiefs more strategic options. Teams will need to balance grip and speed to optimize performance with these Goodyear Racing Eagle setups.”
Goodyear’s tires have faced scrutiny this season, with fans and drivers citing inconsistent performance as a factor in race outcomes. While defending its products, Goodyear has been working to improve tire reliability. The new tire aims to address Kansas Speedway’s notorious tire wear issues, potentially enhancing race strategy and competition.
Among the Cup Series drivers, Hendrick Motorsports’ Kyle Larson stands out at Kansas, with two wins, including one earlier this year, and an average finish of 6.3. As the playoffs continue, Ryan Blaney has secured a Round of 8 spot, while Larson, Denny Hamlin, and Christopher Bell are among the favorites based on their strong Kansas track records.
