Formula E News: Jake Dennis tops the opening session in Mexico City
Mexico City, January 9, 2026 – Championship leader Jake Dennis (Andretti Formula E – pictured) continued his strong form from the season-opening victory in São Paulo by topping the timesheets in Free Practice 1 (FP1) for the 2026 Hankook Mexico City E-Prix. The 30-minute session kicked off Round 2 of Season 12 and marked the historic 150th race in ABB FIA Formula E World Championship history.

On the revised Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez layout—which removes the chicane after Turn 8 for a longer straight into Turn 9 and the Foro Sol stadium section—drivers dealt with traffic and setting sun conditions. Despite radio complaints about rear-end handling on his Porsche-powered car, Dennis delivered a late flyer of 1m06.053 to claim P1 unchallenged.
Pascal Wehrlein (Porsche Formula E Team) finished second in a special-liveried Porsche honoring Hans Herrmann’s 1954 Carrera Panamericana-winning 550 Spyder (following Herrmann’s recent passing at age 97). Reigning champion Oliver Rowland completed the top three.
The session highlighted Porsche powertrain strength in the later stages, with traffic affecting clean laps (including for Wehrlein). Taylor Barnard (DS Penske) received a black-and-white flag for impeding. This FP1 served as initial setup and familiarization, setting the stage for Saturday’s action.
