Formula 1 News: Frankenstein cars reduce Australian GP Overtake zones from 4 to 1

As a result of Formula 1 ruining their sport with electrical power that runs out before the end of straights, Formula 1 has taken the four DRS zones that Albert Park had for the Australian GP in previous years, and reduced it to only one overtake zone so drivers harvest as much energy as possible for their one overtake chance (see maps below).

This is what happened because Formula 1 and the FIA appeased the tree-huggers by making the cars power split almost 50/50 between electric and internal combustion motors. Hence they are now referred to as ‘Frankenstein Cars,’ a term coined by Christian Horner.

They have made Formula 1 a follow-the-leader parade with qualifying being everything. Get out in front at the start, and no one will be able to pass you.

Why?

Because overtake mode can be used defensively as well as offensively, the most idiotic decision possible.

The new 2026 Formula 1 “Overtake Mode” (often referred to alongside “Boost Mode”) is designed to be used both offensively to pass and defensively to protect a position.

Key Details on 2026 Overtake/Boost Mode:
  • Offensive Use: activated when within one second of the car ahead, it provides a surge of extra power to facilitate passing, acting as a direct replacement for the previous DRS system.
  • Defensive Use: Drivers can use their stored energy to boost out of corners or on straights to prevent an opponent from getting close enough to initiate an attack.
  • Energy Management: Drivers must manage their battery charge, as using too much boost defensively may leave them vulnerable to being re-overtaken later
