Japan MotoGP race could be cancelled
The Motegi event had been set for 22-24 April, but was always in doubt with Japan presently facing a massive relief and reconstruction effort, continuing problems with damaged nuclear facilities, and power shortages.
A spokesperson from the FIM, motorcycling's governing body, confirmed to the Associated Press that the race would be rescheduled.
03/14/11 MotoGP commercial rights holder Dorna Sports has expressed its full support for Japan as the country continues to slowly recover from the earthquake and subsequent tsunami which has caused mass destruction in the country. The Spanish company adds that there is no rush in making a decision over this season’s Japanese Grand Prix.
The Motegi race is currently set to take place on 24 April, although Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta stresses that thoughts are with those involved in the tragedy.
“Japan is a very important country to this championship and we are with them during these very painful moments," he commented. “No decision will be made until it is seen how events evolve during this week, putting the interests of Japan above what was to be the third round of the season.
“I have had the opportunity to speak with those at the Motegi Circuit, where fortunately none of those who work there were injured. It remains to be seen how those involved deal with this terrible event. For our part we are there for whatever they need. MotoGP will do what Japan asks us."
