Newgarden leads Penske 1-2 in opening IndyCar practice

Josef Newgarden and Will Power ran 1-2 in practice for the Iowa Corn 300 in their Penske Chevys Saturday morning on a bright sunny day. Newgarden turned a lap of 17.519s to beat Power by 0.0259s.

However, their times were set with a tow and it was Alexander Rossi's lap of 182.223mph with no-tow that was easily fastest on a single run with no help.

Andretti Hondas ran 3-4-5 with Ryan Hunter Reay at 17.5681s nipping Rossi's best lap of 17.6619s and Zach Veach slotted in close behind at 17.6895s.

The only spin in the session was James Hinchcliffe who lost the back end of his SPM Honda on the exit of pit lane – he spun but didn't hit anything.

The top 21 cars were separated by less than 1-second.
