Ahead of September’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race on Charlotte Motor Speedway’s new “roval" course, SMI has trademarked the term “Roval," the company confirmed today to THE DAILY.

Roval is a combination of the word “road," implying a road course, and “oval." CMS is switching the fall race from its traditional oval track to a course that combines part of the oval with CMS’ infield road course. The Bank of America 500 will likely be the most high-profile NASCAR race ever run on such a course.

CMS Exec VP Greg Walter last week told THE DAILY that ticket sales are up year-over-year for the event. Adam Stern/SBD
